Program Leader
Camp Tamarack strives to provide an inclusive and barrier free outdoor camping experience through accessible, fun-filled and innovative programs. Our safe and positive environment nurtures personal and social growth by allowing individuals to connect to nature and develop physically, socially, spiritually and emotionally. Through this we hope to enhance the quality of life of everyone in our camp and create positive opportunities to discover one’s potential. Our Program leaders live our Core Values of Inclusion, Community, Empowerment, Belonging and Adventure. You will work with an all-star team to deliver high quality, fun, safe, and inclusive outdoor experience programs to a variety of campers. Your part is to ensure that all program areas are run in a safe, fun, and positive manner. The aim of our activities is to provide all participants with a supportive and engaging environment during their time with us.
Through all the seasons, our goals are to create a unique and fun experience for our campers. Program Leaders work as a team to create opportunities for campers to improve their self-confidence and independence, in a supportive and positive environment. As the point person for our campers, you are responsible for ensuring their health and safety during their time at camp.
While you are caring for our Campers, we will be caring for you by providing all your meals and accommodations during your programs, sessions and training. We will offer you skills training to expand your expertise as well as a wage of $525 per week. You must be at a minimum 18 years old for this opportunity. Our ideal leader would also be able to qualify for the Canada Summer Job Grant Program!
What you must have:
• Ability to take initiative and a strong work ethic • Proven communication and teamwork skills
• Have a desire to work with children, youth and people of all abilities
• Be available for Spring training Beginning of May
• Be available to attend the entire week of Summer Orientation in June 16 – June 22
• Standard First Aid and Class ‘C’ CPR
• Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Persons Search
• Clear Child Welfare Check (Alberta Residents Only) What we would wish you have or were working towards: • Experience working at an outdoor education centre or summer camp • Wilderness Advanced First Aid or Wilderness First Responder
• ACCT accredited ropes facilitator training (e.g. AdventureWorks Levels I or II) or willing to obtain. (Level 1 course offered at Camp Tamarack, May 6-10th)
What we will train you to do in the Spring and Fall:
• Provide Camp Leadership during a groups experience at our facility • Facilitate outdoor programs (hikes, orienteering, archery, team building, etc.) • Facilitate challenge course programs (low ropes, climbing wall, giant swing) What we will ask of you in the Spring and Fall: • Apply risk management techniques and appropriate safety protocols • Ensure all buildings and program areas are ready and clean before and after a groups’ visits • Maintain equipment through appropriate repairs (training provided) • Ensure equal opportunities are available for participation through utilization of adventure-based learning techniques, such as Challenge by Choice • Promote a positive attitude towards stewardship of our natural environment • Perform other duties as required
What we will ask of you in the Summer:
•To provide leadership and guidance to all campers
•Supervision and care of campers, at all times
•Be a positive role model that exemplifies the values of Camp Tamarack
•Work as a member of the community and staff team.
•Guide and adapt programs for campers to achieve rewarding benefits.
•Providing emotional support and encouragement to campers.
•Be familiar with the special needs, medical conditions, dietary concerns, and/or behavioral problems of the campers and act according to directions provided. (We will offer you training with this)
•Perform Night Duty as required on a rotational basis.
•Ensure that safety standards and procedures are always maintained
•Report any accidents/incidents to the Camp Director and Camp Nurse/Medic.
•Provide personal care, feeding, toileting, dressing and bathing for campers as required.
•Assist in program planning based on pre-arranged educational/recreational themes.
•Assist in tidying up after activities.
•Ensure the cleanliness of the camp by participating in daily and weekly clean up.
Contract Dates: May 13th – August 26th, with the opportunity for the right leader to stay with us into the Fall.
