How to Become a Peer Counsellor
We are always looking for new students to join the Peer Counselling Team. This is a voluntary program that is time consuming, very demanding, but very rewarding! You must be a GPRC student to become a Peer Counsellor. Once accepted, you will begin the 93+ hour training process, which is completed over the course of three months in the fall or the winter semester. This training is free to you because it is funded by GPRC and Alberta Campus Mental Health Innovation (ACMHI). A description of the various training modules is available here training modules.
The overall training objective is to help you develop skills for one-on-one peer counselling. Training modules are taught by highly knowledgeable and experienced mental health professionals. You will gain knowledge as well as the application of counselling techniques to various real-life problems. Moreover, you will learn self-monitoring and self-evaluation skills through role play, ethical practices, gain knowledge in a wide range of students’ issues, and professionalism. This series of training is regularly completed by current mental health professionals and should enhance your credentials such that the probability of employment or admission to graduate schools is increased.
Upon completion of the peer counselling training, you will be asked to volunteer between 3 to 6 hours per week at the GPRC Peer Counselling Centre. We understand that this is a huge commitment during a very busy time in your life; therefore, volunteering hours can be flexible to suit your needs as much as possible. If you complete the training during the fall semester, you will be required to volunteer for the one-on-one counselling hours during the winter semester. Should you complete the training during the winter semester, you will be required to start the one-on-one counselling during the following fall semester.
