FAIRVIEW CAMPUS CONVOCATION (The Ceremony)
The Convocation ceremony will be held on March 11, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. in the Fred Speckeen Theatre.
All College parking lots will be available for graduates and guests. All stalls are free on a first-come, first-parked basis.
COSTUME (What to wear)
Students must be wearing graduation gowns in order to be in the student procession.
The academic gowns are black. Students receiving a diploma will wear a white vee stole and a white cap. Students receiving a certificate will wear a red vee stole and a red cap. Apprentices will wear a gray vee stole and gray cap.
Caps(mortarboards) are worn squarely on the head with the tassel to the right, switching the tassel to the left once you have shaken hands, etc. and are exiting the stage.
Women’s dresses under the academic gowns should be simple in cut and no longer than calf length. Please choose your shoes carefully, you will be required to walk up and down stairs, extremely high heels can cause you a problem.
Corsages and jewellery are not worn with academic gowns. If it should be necessary to bring a handbag, you are asked to leave it in the gowning up room (the room will be locked and secure). You will not be permitted to carry your handbag in the student procession.
Rental gowns, stoles and hoods must be returned after the ceremony. The caps and tassels are mementos and are yours to keep.
WHEN AND WHERE FOR GRADUATES (You will need to be on time!)
11:30 a.m. SHARP in Notley Square for Gown Up.
Notley Square is located near the College Residences. You will receive your cap and gown and a review of the ceremony procedures in preparation for the academic procession. The marshalls will give directions about what activities you will need to do and then, following the photograph session, will assemble you into line-ups for entrance into the theatre.
1:00 p.m. Group photo of all graduates. Don't be late!
The Student Marshall will lead the graduands into Fred Speckeen Theatre for a group photo of all graduates before the ceremony at 1:00 p.m. Although there is not a lot of time, groups of students (such as Animal Health Technology or Transitional Vocational) may also have their picture taken. No family or friends will be allowed in the theatre at this time.
During the ceremony, a photographer will take a picture of each graduate as they are recognized on stage. These photos will be available for sale at FX Photo shortly after Convocation day.
STUDENT COMMENT CARDS (What we will say about you)
The comments that you provide will be typed and read onstage. An area for your comments is on the back of the application form below. Only comments submitted by February 1, 2016 will be read on stage. These are to be kept to a maximum of 25 words and are subject to editing for clarification, grammar and brevity.
After the ceremony you and your guests are invited to the President’s Tea, held in the Atrium, for light refreshments. If your guests are new to the College you may wish to show them the area before you go to the gown-up room.
Please indicate to us, by contacting our Convocation Coordinator at 780-835-6614 or FairviewGrads@gprc.ab.ca, if you or one of your guests has special needs, such as a wheelchair or walker. This is extremely important in regards to seating arrangements for your guests; we would like to make special arrangements for them to be seated before the general public is admitted into the theatre.
A formal invitation to the ceremonies will be mailed to the address that you have provided. Tickets will not be issued for audience members and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
