The Program
Spirit of Our Youth homes provide culturally-based programming, support and safe, home-based accommodations to First Nations, Metis or Inuit children and youth age 3 to 24. Our trauma-informed services empower those we serve and help foster community connections with honesty, compassion and respect.
Traditional teachings can empower youth to make strong connections with family and community. Each youth has access to a cultural coordinator who provides individual support and cultural opportunities including sweats, sharing circles, smudging, pipe ceremonies, feasts, round dances, traditional healing, languages and access to community Elders and Cultural Helpers.
The Position
Start date: Jan-Feb 2021
Spirit of Our Youth Homes is hiring an Indigenous Culture Resource Coordinator to be a cultural resource for activities, events, protocol, oversee individual cultural plans, help our youth stay connected to family and their home community as well as, coordinate staff training. They will share traditional cultural values and beliefs with the youth and staff of Spirit or Our Youth and support each youth according to their individual Cultural Plan.
For youth, reconnecting to their indigenous culture can be a powerful way to heal from past traumas and to envision a stronger, healthier future. By encouraging a connection with their indigenous culture, positive role-modeling and a strength-based approach, Spirit of Our Youth Homes helps indigenous youth focus on personal empowerment, understand their strengths, needs and goals and build healthy relationships with their families & communities.
Due to the nature of the position, we prefer people who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit and Metis) with strong cultural ties to the community. Fluency in an Indigenous language would be considered an asset.
In Your Role You Will
- Coordinate and deliver traditional Indigenous teachings and practices (Ex. Traditional Parenting, sweats, sharing circles, smudging, pipe ceremonies, feasts, dances, traditional healing)
- Demonstrate practical and historical knowledge of intergenerational trauma, stress and cultural repression
- Be a positive role model and encourage supportive and trusting relationships with youth, family members and Spirit staff, in a healthy and safe environment.
- Build a model of cultural safety for grieving which includes the ceremonial healing process, and to reintroduce the traditional ways of knowing and doing.
- Engage in collaborative community partnerships to promote traditional healing, cultural teachings and practice.
- Participate in program meetings, agency meetings and training.
- Maintain client/program confidentiality and appropriate record/information system.
- Complete documentation of each visit and the work with children, youth and families (contact notes, pre-post evaluation, monthly summary of programming per site).
- Maintain composure and performance while under stress or pressure, utilizing various appropriate coping skills to manage personal stress.
Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a current (dated within 6 months of hiring date) Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check. These checks can take up to 6 weeks to obtain, please ensure you prepare accordingly.
As An Ideal Candidate You Possess
- Social Work Diploma, Human Services Diploma, or Aboriginal studies with lived experience or equivalent experience
- Mandatory experience with case management.
- Minimum 5 years' experience working with Indigenous youth and families.
- Teachings and experience in Aboriginal ancestry, traditional language, cultural knowledge, healing practices and wisdom of the Indigenous community including Metis, First Nations and Inuit.
- Strong cultural ties to the community.
- Fluency in an Indigenous language would be considered an asset.
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License and clean driver’s abstract with personal car insurance (2 million in third party liability)
- Ability to deal with crisis situations, to ensure safety for youth in the program.
- First Aid/CPR Certificate
- Suicide Intervention, Self Harm and Crisis Intervention training
- Aboriginal awareness and cultural diversity training
- Able to work and follow Spirit of Our Youth Homes Inc. policies and procedures and adhere to Alberta Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act.
- Must have knowledge in Microsoft Office and Excel
