GRANDE PRAIRIE – GPRC athletes Kenny Johnson, Michael Clemons and Jackie Elgert were voted to the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference (ACAC) All-Conference Basketball teams 2015-16 while Wolves Men’s Coach Thomas Slifka was named ACAC North Division Coach of the Year.
The honours were handed out at the ACAC Banquets at the Conference Championships held last night. Johnson, Clemons and Slifka were recognized in Olds where the men’s championships are being hosted by Olds College. Elgert was recognized in Lloydminster where Lakeland College is hosting the women’s championship.
Johnson, who plays guard is second in the North Division in scoring with 409 points and second in assists with a total of 77 this season. Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Johnson is in his third year and taking open studies at GPRC.
Clemons, a guard, leads the North Division in assists with a total of 146 and with a record of 0.514 per cent and is third in field goal percentages. The third year Bachelor of Physical Education student is originally from El Paso, Texas.
Elgert, also a guard, is third in scoring in the North Division with 262 points after missing five games due to an injury. She also has a record of 36.5 steals which put her in eighth in the division. The third-year Bachelor of Science student is originally from Rochester, Alberta.
Coach Slifka is in his first year as the GPRC Wolves Men’s Basketball Head Coach and led the team to 15 wins this season in addition to setting a priority on academics for the team with study hall and academic monitoring becoming part of the program. This resulted in team members achieving their best academic semester in the fall.
“Thomas is the third coach in three years for the team and he took a group of players, recruited prior to his arrival, and transformed them into a cohesive unit. He set standards and values for the team that would not be compromised,” says Francois Fournier, GPRC Athletic Director. “Kenny, Michael and Jackie each had an excellent season and made significant contributions to their teams making this recognition very well-deserved.”
