News Archives: GPRC Making Some Noise For Mental Health
Thursday, February 4th, 2016
GRANDE PRAIRIE– GPRC Wolves have teamed up with the Grande Prairie Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and GPRC Peer Counselling to Make Some Noise for Mental Health this weekend.
The mental health awareness initiative is a project of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) and the Alberta Division of the CMHA.
Representatives from the CMHA and the GPRC Peer Counselling program will be available at the Wolves Volleyball home games on Feb. 5 and 6 to share information and resources about the mental health services available on campus and in the community.
GPRC students face managing work, family and community commitments all the while keeping up with their studies to achieve their education goals. GPRC student athletes face an added pressure of spending upwards of 25 hours per week training and competing. Maintaining their mental health is essential to their success.
GPRC’s Peer Counselling program and its partnerships with community agencies, ensures GPRC students have access to the mental health services and resources they need to succeed.
The public is invited to show their support for mental health in the community and on campus while cheering for their GPRC Wolves. The GPRC Wolves Men’s and Women’s Volleyball teams will be playing the King’s University Eagles. Games start at 6 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday in the GPRC gymnasium. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and children six and older and free for children five and younger and for all GPRC students.
GPRC is a comprehensive community institution, publicly supported to provide opportunities in post-secondary education in northwestern Alberta. Established in 1966 in Grande Prairie, GPRC now includes campuses in Fairview and Grande Prairie, and learning centres in Edson, Grande Cache, Hinton and Jasper. GPRC offers a wide variety of career certificates and diplomas, pre-employment and apprenticeship trades, university transfer studies, and several opportunities for on-campus degree completion at baccalaureate and master levels through collaborations with four-year universities.
