Tuesday, October 21st, 2014
The busses will be rolling in to Grande Prairie Regional College on Wednesday, bringing hundreds of students to Community Learning Day, the annual Open House hosted at GPRC Grande Prairie. They are travelling from schools throughout the Peace Region and beyond – as far west as Fort St. John, from Paddle Prairie in the north, from Donnelly, Valleyview, High Prairie and Kinuso to the east and south. They are arriving in groups of 10 to 50 – and Peace Wapiti Academy in Grande Prairie is releasing all 350 of its high school students to attend the event.
GPRC will welcome the students with opportunities to learn about the various programs offered at the College, and provide guidance andinformation about the application process including financial aid. Tours of the campus, contests and activities are also planned to help introduce students to the world of post-secondary study.
Between tours of the building and gathering information about available programs, the visiting high school students will find some entertaining options, such as a game show event in Howlers. Several Bachelor of Education students who are studying Drama this year are hosting the game show to test the knowledge of participating high school visitors about the College. Another contest is “Name the Rabbit”; one of the bunnies from the Animal Health program will be on site to inspire creative entries.
This year, the College is pleased to partner with the community group Conspiracy of Hope to help raise awareness on the importanttopic of suicide. The Conspiracy of Hope is a locally created exhibition of images and messages, and organizers are eager to share this exhibition with students at both high school and college levels. The exhibition is being presented on our campus for Community Learning Day on October 22. High School students have pre-registered, and the exhibit is open to College students on a drop-in basis.
Community Learning Day was first proclaimed in October 2012 when Grande Prairie Mayor Bill Given formally established the fourth Wednesday of October as “Community Learning Day.”
