News Archives: GPRC & Region Great "Trade Places"
Wednesday, October 30th, 2013
Grande Prairie Regional College introduced a new series of photos and stories “Trade Places” today at the annual Community Learning Day – Open House. The images feature alumni, current students and faculty in various trades offered at GPRC. The text tells their stories, which succinctly describe the change in lifestyle and work situation made possible through study of a Trade.
The photos are compelling, the workplaces are interesting and fulfilling, and the messages are clear: a Trade is a strong career choice, GPRC is a good place to achieve your goals in a Trade, and there are numerous employers ready to provide jobs to successful graduates. GPRC has been offering apprenticeship and trades programs since July 2009.
The Community Learning Day event featured the broad range of programs offered through GPRC – academic upgrading, university transfer and degree completion, numerous certificates and diplomas, and short courses supporting industry needs for safety and business training through Continuing Education. All of the programs were represented in the tradeshow-style displays, and participants enjoyed a wide variety of interactive presentations of options for further learning.
Mayor Bill Given was on hand to make the annual Proclamation declaring Community Learning Day, and stating the commitment of the City of Grande Prairie to strengthening a culture of learning in our community.
In addition to information about programs, prospective students found information about financing one’s education, the facts about how to prepare for post-secondary learning, and the opportunity to speak with instructors and current students. The event is also appealing to members of the general public, who enjoy the interactive displays, entertainment, and the community craft fair, which was a first at the event this year.
The introduction of the “Trade Places” campaign also launches a contest which encourages online sharing of the information. Participating contestants will, over the coming several weeks, be eligible for one of several draws for $1,000 Canadian Tire gift certificates. GPRC, its communities and its region are indeed great “Trade Places.”
