News Archives: GPRC Ranks High Among Canadian Colleges For Research
Wednesday, October 23rd, 2013
Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges in 2013 were announced this morning by Research Infosource Inc., and Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) is ranked #1 for growth, #3 for research intensity, and #15 for research funding. This is a remarkable change from our 46th place ranking last year, and is credited in part to the establishment of the National Bee Diagnostic Centre one year ago.
Alberta is strongly represented in the rankings, with SAIT and NAIT in first and second respectively in research income. A news release issued today states that “The combined research income of Canada’s 50 leading research colleges was $117.3 million in Fiscal 2012, according to Research Infosource Inc., which today released its inaugural ranking of Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges. By attracting a total of $9.8 million in funding, SAIT Polytechnic emerged as the leading college in research income, followed by NAIT Northern Alberta Institute of Technology ($6.3 million).”
GPRC, at 15th ranking, attracted a total of $2.56 million, and had a phenomenal growth rate of 377.8%, exceeding by far the rate of growth at any other institution. Ten members of faculty at GPRC are involved in the research which was identified by this ranking, and projects include social research and environmental research as well as bee population health and diagnostic research.
The Centre for Research & Innovation (CRI) at GPRC is the body which helps researchers to secure necessary funding for these projects, and which manages the necessary contracts and facilities pertinent to the research.
“GPRC is very proud to have achieved this national recognition,” says Susan Bansgrove, Vice-President Academics and Research. “This College is committed to provide opportunities in applied research for the benefit of our faculty and our students. We are also very proud that the applied research being conducted at our College provides immense benefit to the stakeholders of our region, our province and beyond.”
