GPRC honoured donors and the student recipients of annual and endowed awards, scholarships and bursaries at a reception held February 15 at the College. Over 125 people attended the elegant event, which was hosted by the Alumni Foundation Board of Directors. “We are very proud of our strong awards program,” says Don Gnatiuk, GPRC President and CEO. “The total value of scholarships and awards in 2010 is $442,000, and the total value of bursaries for 2010 is $225,000. The generosity of businesses, individuals and organizations in our community is making a very big difference in the lives of students, and we extend heartfelt thanks on their behalf.” Many of the students who have received the 670 awards dispersed to date this year were in attendance, and found the opportunity to meet and thank the donors of their awards. Among them was Darren Stoupe, who spoke eloquently of the student experience and expressed warm thanks to donors. Stoupe, a Fitness Leadership student, is the recipient of four awards to date. “Our awards program removes many barriers to education for our students,” says Susan Bansgrove, Vice President Academics and Research at GPRC. “Being the recipient of an award rewards academic accomplishment, and it is a major factor in encouraging students to stay in our region during their years of study and beyond.” Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to meet and mingle, accompanied by the music of harpist Hannah Irwin, a local high school student. Alumni Development Manager Joanne Ballance, who emceed the event, says it is the intention of GPRC to host this event annually. -30-
