Grande Prairie – For over a decade, second-year GPRC Business students have been running Peace Country Idol, an annual event looked forward to by the community each year. This year, Peace Country Idol has a new spin.
The first annual Peace Country Rising Star Talent Show will happen at GPRC on November 24 in the Douglas J. Cardinal Performing Arts Centre.
The event, modelled after Peace Country Idol, will embrace the many talents found in the city and provide the GPRC Marketing Project Management class with hands-on experience running an event.
“Allowing this event to become an all-inclusive talent show is really exciting to me,” said marketing student, Kasey Jamison. “As a class, we are striving to help discover the many talents found in Grande Prairie and I think it’s going to be an awesome opportunity for people to show us what they’ve got.”
Together, the students form teams that research, implement and carry out marketing activities for the event. They gain practice in the implementation and control processes necessary to host a large-scale charitable event in a business environment.
“This is an exciting project for the students. They have created and designed the event, and they are motivated and energized to put on the first Peace Country Rising Stars Talent Show,” said GPRC business instructor, Carolyn Vasilieou. “This class gives the students hands-on experience with what it is like to run a business, including idea creation, team building, problem solving, budgeting, production and so much more.”
Proceeds from the Peace Country Rising Star Talent Show will benefit future class events at the College, such as the annual Business Conference and a charity of the class’s choice.
“Networking with companies and expanding our knowledge and experience is great,” said marketing student Catherine Dyer. “However, the real lesson is in being able to give back to the community. It’s a powerful influence because it brings the class together towards a common goal, more so than just getting a grade. Even though we are revitalizing the entire event, it is our concrete foundation to always give back, in the past, present and future.”
