News Archives: GPRC Research & Innovation Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Open House
Friday, September 22nd, 2017
GRANDE PRAIRIE – Although research and innovation have always been part of the GPRC culture, this year marks one decade since the GPRC department of Research & Innovation was formally created.
To celebrate, the College invited the community to visit and learn about research and innovation at GPRC. Guests were invited to tour the GPRC carbon capture solarium, which houses Pollutants to Products (P2P) Microalgae Technology, and to GPRC’s National Bee Diagnostic Centre (NBDC) in Beaverlodge for tours.
At the Grande Prairie campus, a day-long hallway display with around 20 posters and information tables offered visitors a glimpse into a few of the scholarly activities of GPRC faculty and students. Many departments and disciplines were represented here, including Science, Fine Arts, Nursing and Health Education, and Business Administration. “It goes to show there is a real variety of talent at GPRC,” said Dr. Andrew Dunlop, Manager Scholarship Research Innovation. “We are proud to facilitate this important work at our college, and hope all faculty members feel empowered to pursue scholarship at GPRC.”
The day ended with a celebration at Howlers Lounge, where President and CEO Don Gnatiuk and a number of other speakers delivered remarks about the history and future of the department. Gnatiuk noted the reputation that northwest Alberta maintains as a leader in innovative activities: “The Peace Region has always been a hotbed for innovators, inventors, entrepreneurs, and researchers.” He added that the contributions of GPRC R&I have positioned the College “to lead the development of technologies, training and talent” in the Peace Region.
Research & Innovation Director Dr. Bruce Rutley said that he was grateful to be able to share the accomplishments of the department and the College with the community. “This department was built on community partnerships,” he said. “None of what we have accomplished in the past ten years would have been possible without our many partners and supporters, so it is fitting that many of them are here sharing in this celebration with us.”
GPRC Research & Innovation leads the development of applied research and innovation capacity throughout the Peace Region and beyond. GPRC Research & Innovation’s three major funded initiatives are Pollutants to Products (P2P), Community Enhancement Research (CER), and the National Bee Diagnostic Centre – Technology Access Centre (NBDC-TAC). It also supports smaller student- and faculty-led projects throughout the college and offer grant facilitation, help with proposals, and other services to individuals interested in conducting research and other scholarly activities.
