GRPC Employee Wins Photo Contest

GPRC's own Velda McKenzie-Diederich won first place in the sixth annual County of Grande Prairie and Watson's Foto Source photo contest recently. The competition is divided into two specific categories: Scenes of the County and Creative Photos taken within the county. Velda won first place in the creative category out of almost 100 entries.  She won a brand new Canon camera, donated by Watson's Foto Source. Congratulations Velda!  Your friends throughout the college and your colleagues in Workforce Development must be proud!

GPRC Wolves Alumni Weekend

Join us for a Wolves Alumni Weekend, February 12-14 at Grande Prairie Regional College.  Please mark your calendar and plan to attend.  The schedule includes a double header featuring our Wolves men’s and women’s Basketball and Volleyball teams. As well as some excellent entertainment, we will be hosting a reception for current Wolves parents Saturday from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm in Room L106.  Later that evening, please plan to join us for an alumni reception at Maddhatters beginning at 9:00 pm.

RCMP Supports Scholarships at GPRC

Annual Archie Harvey Memorial Golf Tournament

August 28, 2009, marked the 37th Annual Archie Harvey Memorial Charity Golf Tournament which was held at the Dunes Golf and Country Club in Grande Prairie. Cpl. Harvey was a member of the Grande Prairie RCMP who was killed in the line of duty on June 23, 1967.

Since its inception, funds raised as a result the tournament have provided for two scholarships at the Grande Prairie Regional College. Thanks to the generosity of tournament supporters, for the past two years other deserving organizations have also been assisted.

This year, the tournament organizing committee is proud to announce that in addition to supporting the scholarships ($2000), the tournament is also supporting Grande Prairie Regional Victim's Services ($1000), the DARE program in Grande Prairie ($1000) and the "K" Division Slain Peace Officers Fund ($500).

The photograph includes representatives of beneficiaries of the tournament. From left to right they are:

Excellence in People

At the January Board of Governors meeting, the following recognition was presented by Don Gnatiuk on behalf of the Executive Team:

• Executive recognizes Geoff Whittall, Chair of the Department of Fine Arts and the following staff for their wonderful Christmas Concert performances: GPRC Concert Choir, John Murray; Carmen Bartel, accompanist; GPRC Wind and Jazz Ensembles, Robert Howey; Music Student noon hour recitals, Carmen Gorgichuk, John Murray, Chris McIntyre; Fay Bredeson for organizing numerous recitals for Conservatory students and instructors in L106.
John Murray is also thanked for arranging an extraordinary performance of Choir 1 and 2 for the Board of Governors and Executive.
• The Organizing Committee of the December 18, 2009 Fairview Campus Christmas party: David Burgess, Shannon Ball, Peter Sellers, Kelly Rainer, Tara Morrison, Dianne Lund, Carl Ball.
• The Student Services staff and volunteers of the Fairview and Grande Prairie campuses for their extraordinary efforts during January student orientation.
• Congratulations to Jean Reston, Arts and Education Instructor, for fulfilling the requirements of the Doctor of Education program.
• Payroll Coordinator Barb Ollenberger for an exceptionally quick distribution of the employee T4 forms.
David Botta, Fine Arts Instructor, for completing the requirements of the PhD program in the School of Interactive Technologies with Simon Fraser University
Jim Wohlgemuth, Instructor in Nursing Education and Health Services, for completing the requirements of the Bachelor of Health and Nursing Program with the University of Alberta.
Dr. Jerry Petryshyn, Dean of Health, Wellness and Career Studies, for receiving the George Repka award from the City. The George Repka Award, named after a former Grande Prairie Mayor, recognizes individuals who have significantly contributed in a voluntary capacity to the improvement of the quality of life in our community. Jerry’s list of contributions in the areas of recreation, culture and social services is long and GPRC is proud to have him on staff.
• The staff and faculty responsible for the December Science Open House. It was a great success and received more positive feedback from attending schools than ever in the past.
• Appreciation is extended to Franco Carlacci and David Gregg for going above and beyond in the area of student centredness by helping out an alumnus by diagnosing and assisting in the repair of a virused computer.
