David R. Marples is the University Professor in the Department of History & Classics and the Director of the Stasiuk Program on Contemporary Ukraine at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta. He is also the author of twelve, single-authored books and two edited books on topics ranging from Chernobyl to Stalinism in Ukraine, contemporary Belarus and the collapse of the Soviet Union. His articles have appeared in Slavic Review, Europe-Asia Studies, Nationalities Papers, Eurasian Geography & Economics, Post-Soviet Affairs, and others.
His most recent book, published on September 19th, is Heroes and Villains: Constructing National History in Contemporary Ukraine (Budapest: Central European University Press, 2007). At the University of Alberta, he received a McCalla Professorship in 1998, the Faculty of Arts Prize to Full Professors for Excellence in Research in 1999, the J. Gordin Kaplan Award for Excellence in Research in 2003, and a Killam Annual Professorship in 2005-06. He was appointed Full professor in 1995 and a University Professor in September 2006.
