Academic Credentials: Bachelor of Music With Honors, U of A Master of Music, U of A. After graduating from the U of A, John Murray studied voice performance and pedagogy at the Institute of Vocal Performance Pedagogy with Dr. Richard Miller, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Oberlin, Ohio. He is a member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) and attends the NATS conferences every two years. Teaching Areas: Voice Instructor, Choir Director, Aural Skills. Student Success: John Murray has been teaching at GPRC for twenty-one years and is currently the Chairperson of the Fine Arts Department. Many of John's college and conservatory voice students have been accepted into Bachelor of Music programs at some of Canada's top universities and have won numerous awards locally and provincially. Several alumni of the Grande Prairie Regional College Concert Choir have auditioned and been accepted into select university and amateur choirs throughout Canada and the United States. The GPRC Concert Choir, under John's direction, has also commissioned and performed World Premiere performances of many new Canadian Choral Works by Canadian Composer Ms. Christine Donkin. Awards: Con Spirito Award, 2000 Awarded by the Alberta Choral Federation in recognition of dedication and commitment to choral music in the community of Grande Prairie. Mr. Murray was one of six choral conductors chosen from across Canada to participate in a Choral Conducting Masterclass with Ivars Taurins and Pro Coro Canada at Podium 2000 in Edmonton, AB. Accepted, by audition, to be a member of a select male-chorus that performed at the Alberta Music Educators' Conference, 2006. This chorus was directed by Robert Sund who is the director of the Swedish Male Chorus. Memberships: National Association of Teachers of Singing and Alberta Choral Federation. GPRC Choral Ensemble: Students and community members may audition for the Grande Prairie Regional College Concert Choir. The Concert Choir rehearses Tuesday evenings in room L106 at the college.
