This spring, I participated in Explore, a five week French Immersion course held at the Université Sainte-Anne in Nova Scotia. I lived with students from all across Canada, each with varying French speaking abilities, which was challenging at times, but fun and rewarding in the end. I have travelled abroad, experiencing other cultures around the world and I am very thankful for this opportunity, to experience an unfamiliar culture within my own country. The university is in an Acadian region, so I had the privilege of being immersed in their culture; experiencing their food, language and history. With class every morning, workshops in the afternoon, and activities throughout the evenings and weekends, it was impossible to be bored. The class time was very enriching; I learned much from my professor and enjoyed class discussions with other students from all over the country. Through workshops and organized activities, sports and games, I was able to practice, learn more of and improve my French in a practical way. Explore was a great opportunity to experience French culture in a unique and exciting way." – Kirsten Manz, GPRC Student
I attended the Explore program in Ottawa in May and can’t even begin to explain the experience I had! It was extremely scary going to a whole new place and not knowing anyone but I definitely recommend trying it! You will learn more in five weeks then you could ever imagine. The people you meet will be your friends forever; everyone was so nice and helpful at the Explore program. The program supplied numerous activities such as trips to the museums, cinemas and fun activities like dance classes and more! It was truly the most amazing, unforgettable trip, but it is very intensive and you have to want to be there. It is a lot of information packed into only five weeks and you will be non-stop busy with this program but I promise that you will never experience anything like it! I was at a beginner French level when I went and I came back understanding French way better and being able to carry on a conversation with someone. If you have the chance to go on the Explore program take it because you will honestly have the time of your life and meet some truly amazing individuals! - Kyla Gilchuk, GPRC Student
I recently finished my 2nd year of Commerce at GPRC and this spring I had the pleasure of participating in the Explore program at Laval University in Quebec City. During that time, I was presented with many opportunities to practice speaking French, both in and out of the classroom. I was challenged by a variety of subjects that served to improve my language skills, whether it was learning advanced grammar or having to listen closely to understand someone whose accent was different than the accents I knew. I can say for certain that by the end of the program I was starting to really think in French, and when I returned home I actually found it odd to hear people speaking English. It was a great way to experience another part of Canadian culture and at the same time put my knowledge of French to use in practical ways.
