The 49th annual Festival of Gold celebration happened in the Douglas J. Cardinal Performing Arts Centre on our GPRC Grande Prairie campus this past Thursday, March 28.
We are reminiscing about honouring our incredible GPRC Wolves athletes at last night’s event.
“Congratulations to all our GPRC athletes for the fantastic work you’re doing inside the classroom and on the field, track, or court,” said GPRC President and CEO, Don Gnatiuk at the celebrations. “GPRC athletes represent our community and region across the province and across Canada. You are ambassadors of not only GPRC but our region. The entire community is proud of your accomplishments.”
There were many incredible honours earned last night at the event. We are excited to announce the GPRC Wolves Athlete and Rookie of the Year recipients.
GPRC Wolves Athletics is proud to congratulate Liam O’Hallahan on receiving the 2018-19 Male Athlete of the Year, and 2018-19 Male Rookie of the Year Awards tonight at the annual GPRC Wolves Festival of Gold celebration. O’Hallahan, a Peace Wapiti Academy graduate is enrolled in the University Transfer Education program at GPRC, and in his rookie season with the Wolves, the 6’3” Guard has certainly made an impact. Playing 20 of the 24 ACAC Conference games and garnering a 16.7 points per game (PTS/G) average, O’Hallahan has positioned himself as a first-class athlete in the conference. Along with a competitive PTS/G, he also recorded a season high, 7.5 rebounds per game, placing him firmly with the best of the conference in that category. With these impressive statistics he earned the 2018-19 ACAC Men’s Basketball North Rookie of the Year, and 2018-19 ACAC All-Conference honours earlier in the season
GPRC Wolves Athletics is proud to congratulate Sophie Melin on receiving the 2018-19 Female Rookie of the Year Award tonight at the annual GPRC Wolves Festival of Gold celebration. Head Coach Mandy Botham’s summary of Melin’s performance in her rookie season speaks volumes to her character and talent as an athlete, “I’m immensely proud of Sophie for receiving this award. Not only is she a skilled and dynamic forward on the court, she is strong academically and a natural leader who brings confidence and composure to our young team.”
Melin, who is in Open Studies at GPRC had a breakthrough season with the Wolves recording a team high 11.6 points per game average. With 115 defensive rebounds (11th in ACAC) and averaging 1.0 blocked shots per game (4th in ACAC) she has made her mark on the conference as a legitimate threat in the key.
GPRC Wolves Athletics is proud to congratulate Megan Koch on receiving the 2018-19 Female Athlete of the Year Award tonight at the annual GPRC Wolves Festival of Gold celebration. Held in the iconic Douglas J. Cardinal Performing Arts Centre, this formal event honours the athletic and academic achievements of GPRC Wolves student-athletes.

She helped all of the first years on and off the field, led by example on the field with her strong running and leadership; and possesses an extraordinary work ethic.
Enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce program at GPRC, Verhun is also a CCAA Academic All Canadian, an academic honour given to student-athletes for maintaining a competitive GPA while in competition.
