Are you worried about leaving 10 minutes earlier? The winter season is almost here again, officially speaking. Time to layer-up and stay warm. I find myself leaving 10 minutes earlier because I either have to clear the snow off my car/driveway or just to beat the slow traffic. Whatever it takes to be on time. Some say there is no such thing as bad weather just bad dressing, I say tell that to the stars! The great thing about this season at GPRC is that the college building is well taken care of. The rooms are set at the right temperature, but hey, don’t forget to bring a warm cup of coffee… because you don’t want to miss out on all the juicy stuff in the classrooms. Just a reminder to always leave your parking permit displayed. It might be a blizzard out there, but the security personnel are always on duty.

With winter set to roll, we too must be prepared. With our winter tires rotated and our winter gear on, we are ready to take on whatever tasks may lie ahead. The fall semester is almost over. Are we ready for winter? With more snow and more schoolwork, I bet we are. On the bright side, Christmas holidays are just around the corner. Don’t forget to cuddle under a blanket with a book at hand, whilst we await this season. Stay safe everyone.

Survival tips for the Winter Semester

Winter temperatures in Grande Prairie can reach up to -40 degrees Celsius which can mean that it takes a very special set of skills to keep on keeping on. The following tips is based on a college students experience on coping with the harsh weathers of GP during the winter semester of college

Survival tips for the Winter Semester:

  1. Be warned, keep warm
  • The keyword here is layering. As a college student, you might not have the budget to buy new winter clothes and let’s face it winter clothes are expensive. It does not only save you money but it also allows you to adjust your clothing based on the temperature. However, sometimes cheaper isn’t always better, if you have any extra money laying around invest in winter clothes that can last for at least the duration of your stay in college.
  1. Be friendly to your classmates
  • Making friends helps you stay engaged in class plus in a case where you couldn’t go to your class because you have no transportation or any personal reasons, you can rely on your classmates to share their notes that day. Also, you won’t know when your car might need a booster, it’s good to be sure that you have a good relationship with your classmates when that happens.
  1. Catch up on sleep 
  • It’s usually dark and cloudy during the winter and this weather might be the perfect time to catch up on sleep. Having enough sleep can give you the energy that you will need in order to focus on your classes. Therefore, more sleep can mean better grades.
  1. Make use of the sunshine
  • We sometimes get a few sunny days during the winter therefor you should make sure that you will take advantage of those day so walk around and enjoy the sun.

The harsh temperatures of winter might be an extra challenge to our already stressful college life but it’s not going to go away any time soon so we might as well make sure that we make the best of it.

What is BellyFit you ask?

Bellyfit is a holistic fitness experience that blends powerful movements and exercises with the spirit of its participants. The first portion of the class you” burn mega calories, relieve stress and have tons of fun executing the fundamentals of belly dance. During the second, enjoy plenty of work on your core and mindful stretching. You’re guaranteed to feel strong and healthy!

So come on GPRC, let’s celebrate the new year together with some awesome DJ Sunshyne mixing beats!

Instructor, Michelle Renee will be bringing over an hour of Bellyfit moves including some shimmying, shaking and smiles! All fitness levels welcome!

Two events are happening this winter semester, so sign up today!!

Cost: $15 per participant (pre-register at 780-539-2436)
Location: M121 Fitness Studio;  across from the Climbing Gym on our GPRC Grande Prairie campus!
