GPRC Wolves Featured Athletes of the Week: March 18, 2019

Each week, two GPRC Wolves athletes are selected for their achievements over the weekend on the field, track, or court. We are pleased to congratulate Brandon Tufford and Maria Houle from our GPRC Wolves Indoor Track team as our current Featured Athletes of the Week!

Brandon Tufford

Program: 1st Year, Bachelor of Engineering
Hometown: Grande Prairie, Alberta

Brandon Tufford graduated from the Grande Prairie Composite High School last year and was recruited to GPRC as one of the top middle distance runners in the province for his age.  In 2018, Brandon placed 3rd in the Provincial High School Championship in the 800m.

During the 2018 cross-country season, Brandon struggled a couple set-backs as stomach issues derailed most of his races. However, when indoor track came around second semester, his fortunes turned around and he consistently placed among the top 3 in his indoor races and setting 7 GPRC Wolves school records.

At the ACAC Indoor Championships this past weekend (March 15-16) in Calgary, Brandon brought home two medals.  He became only the second Wolves male athlete ever to achieve a podium placing at the ACAC level since the first in 2014. Brandon finished second in the 600m, fifth in the 300, and anchored the Wolves men’s 4 x 400m to a third place finish alongside teammates, Joel Manz, Brice Wilkes and Miguel Macedo.

Thank you Brandon for your dedication to the Wolves!

Maria Houle

Program: 3rd Year, Bachelor of Arts
Hometown: Paddle Prairie, Alberta

Maria Houle is a third year Wolves Athlete studying Sociology at GPRC.  She took a year off of school and running last year to have her first child, daughter Willow.

Maria returned to running last fall and placed 16th at the ACAC Cross-Country Running Championships (number 2 among the Wolves) in Vermilion.

For the indoor track season, Maria was asked to step down in distance and compete at the 300m and 600m distances.  She came up big at the ACAC Indoor Championships. Maria won the B Final and placed fifth in the 300m and finished sixth in the 600m.  She also ran a leg on the fourth place Wolves 4 x 400m team.

Thank you Maria for your dedication to the Wolves!
