Playhouse Raffle
NWP Alum, Joseph Davies Wins Playhouse
The Playhouse Raffle was held in the Atrium at Northwestern Polytechnic, Fairview Campus on Wednesday, December 12, 2018. NWP Alumni/ Foundation Board Member Jason Simigan was on hand to draw the winning ticket which went to Joseph Davies of Brownvale, AB. Joseph is an Alum of NWP who completed his Carpentry Apprenticeship in the Winter of 2015.
Construction of the Playhouse is a Second Year project for the Carpentry Apprenticeship program at NWP, and is comparable to building a house, but on a smaller scale. Students learn about drafting a project, determining the order of operations and what materials are required to build a designed structure or item, along with estimating and costing framing and exterior finish quantity materials. Floor, wall and roof framing, coupled with exterior finish wall and roof product installation, which are fundamental to construction, are some of the skills taught by the project. In addition to learning about window and door calculation, construction and installation, students also gain knowledge in exterior soffit and facia installation, a process which allows for ventilation of the roof area. The application of caulking and sealants to fill gaps or cracks between building materials is also an essential skill students gain with this project.
The proceeds of the raffle put the cost of materials back into the Carpentry Apprenticeship program, which supports the students.
