Program # 336-41 Kitty House located in Westlock, Alberta
IMPORTANT-The client owns a cat, therefore staff should have no allergies and be comfortable around cats.
WJS Canada's Community Disability Services team in Westlock encourages persons with developmental disabilities build on their strengths, further develop life skills, overcome barriers and actively participate in their community.
The Position
This front-line role sleeps at the client's residence and is available, if needed, to assist the female person-served, with night-time routine, including personal care/hygiene and during overnight hours ensuring a consistent, healthy and safe environment and providing support in crisis situations.
14 hour shifts on a 4 day rotation (6pm to 8am)
This 14-hour shift position is 6-awake hours (regular rate $18.80- $22.00/hr). Sleep rate of $16.50/hr applies during hours between 10pm and 6am
In Your Role You Will
This front-line Disability Support Worker role assists person served with behavior supports and personal care leading up to bedtime, during overnight hours and with morning routine.
Typical overnight shift may include:
• 6pm to approx 10pm (4 awake hrs) - assist/model nightly bed-time routine (personal hygiene, brushing teeth, etc.) ensuring a consistent, healthy and safe environment for persons in care.
•10pm-6am (8 sleep hrs)- You will be provided a place to sleep (bed or couch) within the residence and sleep hours are paid at minimum wage $16.50/hr. In the event of an emergent situation, sleep staff will be responsible for awake responsibilities to provide immediate support in crisis situations.
•6am-8am (2 awake hrs)- assist/model a regular morning routine with the person-served, including normal hygiene, household tasks (including food prep, daily chores, etc.)
• Assist individuals to develop personal home living skills, sometimes hands on care is required.
• Work with minimal supervision & cooperate with team members to solve problems, resolve conflicts and make decisions.
• Medication administration or first aid, as needed.
• Collect/file information, prepare correspondence, ISPs, and progress reports according to agency, ministry and accreditation standards.
• Participate in shift exchanges & staff communication.
Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a current (dated within 6 months of hiring date) Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check. These checks can take up to 6 weeks to obtain, please ensure you prepare accordingly.
As An Ideal Candidate You Possess
• Two (2) years experience working with persons with a developmental disability or mental health diagnoses.
• MUST HAVE - Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License; reliable vehicle, clean driver’s abstract and adequate insurance
• MUST be physically fit to do lifts and transfers.
• Some personal care to female client is required (may include bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, etc).
• Skills in coaching/assisting individuals in life skills, anger management, daily chores, self help & problem solving, etc.
• Committed to philosophies and principles of community based living for individuals in service.
• Good computer skills - as all files are electronic
• CPR/First Aid & Abuse Protocol training
• Non Violent Crisis Intervention training
