So what is climbing all about anyway?
As one of North America's fastest growing sports, climbing:
- Is accessible to all ages and skill levels
- promotes a keen sense of body awareness
- develops strength, fluidity and balance
- builds self-confidence, trust and teamwork
- promotes the attaining of personal goals in fun setting
The GPRC Climbing Gym offers three levels of climbing:
1. Bouldering (climbing on the lower 12 feet of the wall without a rope or harness). This is a very popular aspect of the sport as it requires little equipment, no experience to start, and you can climb on your own as it suites your schedule.
2. Top-Rope Climbing. Once you are in a harness and have a belayer, they you can climb above the 12 foot bouldering height. We have 10 top-ropes set up and once you have taken our belay course and/or passed the belay test, you are welcome to use them anytime we are open, no booking necessary. Top-rope climbing is extremely safe, and you have to admit, it is fun climbing high. If you don't have time to take the full course, you can always try the First Touch Climbing Course.
3. Lead Climbing. Lead climbing is the most dynamic type of climbing we offer. It is exciting but requires a higher level of skill than top-rope climbing/belaying. We ask that climbers climb at a 5.10 level and have been top-rope belaying for 6 months before signing up for a lead climbing course.
Drop-in climbers
We welcome all drop in climbers during our regular business hours. You do not need to book a time if you are coming in to boulder (climb on the lower 12 feet of the wall), however, if you want to use our rope system and you are not certified, you will need to register for the First Touch Climbing Course. We are able to offer it on a limited drop-in basis, but it may be better to call in advance.
If you have your belay certification for the gym, you do not need to book a time. However, you may want to call and make sure there isn't a booked group already using the ropes.
To belay independently in our gym, you need to pass our belay test and hold a current belay card. If you are a member or punch card holder, the annual re-test fee of $5.00 will be waived.
Booking Opportunities
We book courses for school groups, youth groups, birthday parties, adult groups....you name it, we can do it!
