Winter/Spring 2012 AFLCA Courses
AFLCA exam sittings are held once per month in room J226 at GPRC, at 5:30pm.
Call the Provincial Fitness Unit at
1-866-348-8648 to register to write an AFLCA exam at GPRC.
Exam Dates 2012 last Wednesday of every Month except December
January 25th, February 22nd, March 28th, April 25th, May 30th, June 27th, July 25th, August 29th, September 26th, October 31st, November 28th, December 19th
Exercise Theory
February 3rd, 4th & 5th 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. COST: $325 + GST
This course is the pre-requisite for all AFLCA courses. Participants must take this course prior to the others: Resistance Training,
Group Exercise, Aquatic Fitness, and Older Adult Fitness. This course is 24 hours of instruction, and is required to become a certified AFLCA group exercise leader. Content includes: anatomy, physiology, components of fitness, movement mechanics, nutrition and leadership.
Cycling Designation
May 4th @ 6-9 p.m., May 5th & 6th @ 1-3:30 p.m. COST: $ 165 + GST
A minimum 8 hour course covering topics specific to leading group exercise cycling classes. This practical based course will cover specific information for planning and developing recreational indoor cycling classes. Topics include: bike set-up and safety, pedalling, cadence, posture, class structure and content; class components, music, leadership and choreography design; movement combinations, cardiovascular conditioning, instruction and cueing.
Recertification Course
May 5th & May 6th @ 8-12 p.m. COST: $ 165 + GST
To recertify & maintain your certification status, during the course of your 2-year membership, you must attend an 8 hour recertification course. All specialty areas (Group, Resistance, Aquatic, and Older Adult) are welcome. Topics include anatomy review, industry trends, research updates, and practical time in cardio, core, and stretch.
Group Exercise Fundamentals
April 27th @ 5-7 p.m., April 28th & 29th @ 12:30-5:30pm. COST: $210 + GST
This course is the pre-requisite for any designation courses A minimum 12 hour course covering topics specific to leading group exercise classes. Topics included are: leadership, trends and media, history, legal responsibility and accountability, class components, music, movement and cueing, developing movement combinations, exercise analysis, and special populations. This course may be combined with a specialization practical designation course such as Choreography, Step, Cycle, Portable Equipment or Mind/Body.
Portable Equipment Designation
April 27th @ 7-9 p.m., April 28th & 29th @ 9:00am -12:00. COST: $ 165 + GST
A minimum 8 hour course covering topics specific to leading group exercise portable equipment classes. This practical based course will cover specific information for planning and developing portable equipment classes. Topics include: use of portable equipment, evolution, research and guidelines, class structure and content, planning, class components, use of music, leadership and choreography, equipment exercises, movement combinations, instruction and cueing. *May include, but not limited to the following: free weights, body bars/barbells, stability balls, tubing/resist-a-bands, BOSU, steps, medicine balls, foam rollers.
Resistance Training
March 2nd @ 5-9 p.m., March 3rd & 4th @ 9:00a.m.-5:30 p.m. COST: $ 270 + GST
A minimum 20 hour course covering topics such as leading, shaping, toning, circuit, introductory weight training programs, monitoring fitness centre, and/or weight room orientation. Topics covered include: techniques and precautions, exercise analysis, design, anatomy program design, specialty background, safety considerations, training methods, nutrition and drugs and resistance training with women, older adults and youth.
Refund Policy
A full refund, minus a $20.00 administration fee, will only be issued 5 business days prior to the course start date. A Be Fit For Life Centre credit, minus a $20.00 administration fee, will be issued to anyone required to withdraw from an AFLCA course (for any reason) 1-4 business days prior to the course start date.
