Golden Evening For The Wolves

Carlyon, Team Repeat As Top Award Winners

May 14th, 2011

GPRC Athletics recently held their 40th Annual Festival Of Gold Athletics banquet and the Wolves Women’s Basketball team capped off a successful season with a very successful night.  Wolves forward, Andria Carlyon took the top honour of the night, winning “GPRC Female Athlete of the Year” for the second straight year; this time sharing the award with CCAA National Champion X-Country Runner, Fiona Benson.  Also, for the second straight year, Carlyon was named the team’s Most Valuable Player, alongside team captain, Jaelle Buhler.  In keeping with the repeating theme, Buhler was also named a CCAA Academic All-Canadian again, for her excellence in the classroom and on the court.

The squad also earned a very high honour, as they received the “GPRC Team Academic Award” given to the GPRC team with the highest combined grade point average, for the second consecutive year. The Wolves had an outstanding combined 3.12 GPA and have now won the award seven out of the past ten years. Wolves’ player, Lenka Rohova received the “Individual Academic Award” for having an amazing 4.0 GPA, while also being a member of an athletic team.

Rookie of the Year: Katlyn Roberts / Martine Deinum

Katlyn Roberts

Martine
Martine Deinum

Both players were brought in with high expectations and both players delivered for the Wolves this year.  Katlyn’s sharp shooting often provided the Wolves with the offensive punch they needed at key moments, while Martine developed into a serious threat in the middle with her dominating offensive and defensive play under the basket.  Through their outstanding dedication, both winners developed into excellent players in the ACAC.

Heart & Hustle Award: Chelsea Comeau

Chelsea

It says a lot about a player’s character to win this award but even more about the person when they win this award twice.  For the second consecutive year in a row, Chelsea was chosen for this award, as a result of her tremendous attitude, dedication and her amazing ‘team first’ attitude.  Chelsea was a warrior on the court for the Wolves, doing anything she could possibly do to make herself and her teammates better.  Chelsea’s play is the true definition of ‘Heart and Hustle’.

The ‘Unsung Hero’ Award: Katarina Fialova

Katarina

Always considered to be one of the most important awards, the “Unsung Hero Award”, goes to a player that makes key contributions to the squad and becomes an important piece of the team, despite the fact that they may not always receive the warranted attention or accolades. This year’s winner perfectly fit into that definition.  Katarina came up big for her team in the biggest moments and was one of the main reasons for the Wolves success this season.

Coach’s Choice Award: Caitlin Baker

Caitlin

This award is selected solely by the coaching staff and presented to the player who they feel is the best representation of what the Wolves program is all about.  Caitlin fits these criteria, as her heart and positive attitude shone brightly this season with the Wolves.  The third year player did whatever was needed of her to make the team stronger on a daily basis.  An excellent teammate and an even better person, Caitlin is truly deserving of this honour.

Most Valuable Player: Jaelle Buhler / Andria Carlyon

Andria Carlyon

The Wolves were led by two players this season.  Both made major contributions to their team this year, with their outstanding play and terrific team attitudes.

The team captain, Jaelle Buhler, was the ultimate leader for the Wolves this season both on and off the court.  On the court, Jaelle continued to produce excellent numbers, showing off her versatility, by being amongst the league leaders in several statistical categories.  Off the court, the fifth year veteran was the driving force behind the team, as they continued to strengthen as the season went on.  Jaelle was selected to the ACAC All Conference Second Team for the third time in her career and received her second straight team MVP award.

Andria Carlyon simply had one of the best years of any collegiate players in the country, with her dominant performance for the Wolves.  Andria led the entire CCAA in scoring (21ppg.) and rebounding (13rbpg.) and recorded a double/double in 20 of her 24 ACAC games played this year.  Andria was selected to the ACAC All Conference First Team, as a CCAA All-Canadian, ACAC Player of the Year and received the ultimate honour being named the CCAA Player of the Year.

Both girls amazing seasons helped the Wolves win ACAC gold and experience one of their best seasons in the program’s history.
